At first listen, ‘Overdose’ starts off on a pretty unassuming path, with a stripped-down backing track underlying Mullally’s rich, soulful vocals. My ears pricked up, however, when some staccio horns grow into a deliciously heavy hook that makes up the chorus. ‘Overdose’ is a perfect example of Neo-Soul – an emergent genre rapidly gaining momentum in UK popular culture – at its very best.
It will surprise some people that Mullally himself is a 20-year-old from the sleepy Norfolk, England. His latest track, ‘Troubled Love’ came out in March and is another inviting mix of sultry bass and vocals with electronica. Get your headphones on for this one!
